Runna - Turning Apple Watch into Personal Coach

Runna - Turning Apple Watch into Personal Coach

Our partnership with Runna began with the goal of creating a proof-of-concept run-tracking app for the Apple Watch, designed to complement their iPhone app. Following the successful launch of version 1.0, Runna moved forward with a significant seed funding round of £2.35M. Encouraged by this milestone, Runna then entrusted us with a complete redesign for version 2.0, bringing the app to the whole next level.

Challenge

Developing an intuitive and engaging run-tracking experience on the Apple Watch that worked seamlessly with Runna’s existing iPhone app, within the constraints of wearable technology.

Solution

We delivered a seamless run-tracking experience, focusing on intuitive interaction and real-time syncing between the iPhone and Apple Watch apps, enhanced by a complete redesign in version 2.0 to enrich user engagement.

Outcome

The app’s launch and subsequent redesign significantly broadened its user base and contributed to Runna’s growth, highlighted by the successful seed funding post-version 1.0 🎉

Expanding Horizons with WatchOS

Expanding Horizons with WatchOS

When Runna approached us in early 2022, they had a clear vision but faced a significant challenge. Their startup had an iOS app developed using React Native, which was not compatible with developing apps for watchOS. Their existing app couldn't track runs directly but relied on importing data from Garmin watches. Runna wanted to broaden their horizon and embrace the Apple Watch user base, which promised to significantly expand their potential audience.

They had to create the Apple Watch app from scratch, from recording and tracking runs, through to displaying this on the UI and syncing with the phone as well as iterating based on user feedback.

SOLUTION

Crafting a Native Experience: From Concept to Reality

Crafting a Native Experience: From Concept to Reality

Navigating watchOS Development Complexities The watchOS platform presented a steep learning curve, especially in debugging and testing. Unlike developing for iOS, where ample resources and straightforward testing processes are the norms, ensuring the Runna app’s stability and performance on the Apple Watch demanded more nuanced approaches. Our developers had to adopt innovative debugging techniques and work closely within the watchOS ecosystem's confines to deliver an app that met our high standards.

Real-World Testing for Authentic User Experience Testing the Runna app wasn't confined to simulators; we took to the streets. Our developers used the app in real running sessions, simulating various training scenarios to ensure accuracy and reliability. This hands-on approach allowed us to gather authentic user experience data, making adjustments that refined the app’s tracking accuracy and user interaction. For longer distance runs, such as marathons, we even cycled with the app, ensuring it could accurately track extended activities.

A Redesign Led by Expertise The transition to version 2.0 of the Runna app was marked by a significant redesign, spearheaded by Alp Turgut, a top designer known for his work on the Nike Run app. This redesign not only enhanced the visual appeal of the app but also made it more intuitive and engaging for runners, setting a new standard for what a fitness app can achieve.
